AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — Fire destroyed all three buildings of an apartment complex near downtown Amarillo.

The fire at 209 S. Madison. started around 2 p.m.

Smoke could be seen from miles away.

Firefighters fought the fire from a defensive position due to the condition of the deteriorating structures.

The north wall collapsed.

This apartment complex is a known as a place where homeless people hangout.

AFD said it has responded to 10 fires there in the last 12 months.

One firefighter was assessed on scene by AMS and released.

This fire is still under investigation.

NW 3rd Ave. was closed from Jefferson Street to Madison Street.

A shed across the street caught fire after an ember blew onto the roof, but fire crews stopped it before it did any further damage.
