Amarillo man sentenced in 2022 La Quinta hostage standoff
AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - A man who threatened officers and held a woman hostage at hotel will spend 15 years in prison.
On Wednesday, a Potter County jury convicted Tony Len Nichols of aggravated assault against a public servant, a first-degree felony.
The dramatic event happened on October 21, 2022.
Callers reported seeing a man outside of La Quinta hotel near Coulter St and Wolflin Ave, yelling and waving a gun.
When officers arrived, Nichols ran to his room and would not open the door.
Nichols told the officers he would shoot them and any others who approached.
During the heated exchange with Nichols, police learned that he had a gun and a woman he was holding hostage.
APD dispatched the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), SWAT, and Hostage Negotiator Units to assist.
The hostage was eventually released and officers deployed a chemical agent into the room.
Nichols surrendered shortly after.
He was initially charged with unlawful restraint and deadly conduct and booked into the Potter County Detention Center.
The Potter County DA’s office charged Nichols with the felony aggravated assault in August 2023, nearly a year after his arrest.
The three-day trial took place in 181st District Court with District Judge Tatiana Frausto presiding.
A jury was picked on August 11. Around 15 witnesses testified for the State, most of them law enforcement officers.
Nichols took the stand to testify during the punishment phase on the last day of trial.
The jury deliberated for a short time before returning a verdict of guilty and sentenced Nichols to 15 years in TDCJ.
He must serve at least half of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
