Former Fritch firefighter charged with sexual assault, indecency with child

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - A former volunteer firefighter is facing jail time following his arrest for sex-offenses involving a child.

Daniel Austin Smith, 24, is charged with two counts of indecency with a child and one count of sexual assault of a child.

All three counts are second-degree felonies punishable by two to 20 years in prison.

Court records obtained from Potter County show the offenses happened in April and involve a victim under age 17.

According to a source, Smith was most recently employed with the Fritch Volunteer Fire Department and before that, the Potter County Fire-Rescue.

The FVFD confirmed that Smith was an employee but no longer works there.

Smith also spent time as a corrections officer for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice - Institutional Division.

Two former co-workers reached out to confirm that Smith worked at the Jordan unit in Pampa prior to his stint at the fire departments.

A public information request has been submitted to county attorney for a record of Smith’s employment with the Potter County Fire-Rescue.

Update The County Attorney confirmed that Smith was a volunteer for Potter County Fire and Rescue from October 30, 2023 to April 1, 2025.

Smith was booked into Potter County Detention Center on Monday.

He was released on a $30,000 bond the next day.

Court records for Smith show that he has retained Jesse Quackenbush to represent him.
