Amarillo police confirm second arrest in Felita Bailey homicide case
Nearly seven months after Felita Bailey was fatally shot in the early hours of Aug. 31, 2024 in the 1300 block of Avondale Street, the federal authorities have arrested a second suspect in connection with her killing.
Merron Kanye Bailey, a 20-year-old from Dallas, was arrested by U.S. Marshals on a murder warrant after the case was presented to the Potter County Grand Jury, which issued a true bill decision.
Dylan Black, 22, was arrested and booked into the Potter County Detention Center on a murder charge in early September.
The investigation into Felita Bailey’s death has drawn significant public attention, with more than 70 officers and investigators working to gather evidence.
Over 60 search warrants have been executed, and more than 50 witnesses have been interviewed. The Potter County District Attorney’s Office, U.S. Marshals, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the FBI have all provided valuable support throughout the process.
Police say the shooting came when an after party on Avondale Street escalated into a street fight.
Police at the time said the crowd at the party grew: "When the residents and friends tried to get the uninvited guests to leave, an altercation occurred inside the home. The fight spilled outside the home and shots were fired. A short time later, two gunshot victims arrived at an area hospital."
Officers responded to reports of shots fired just after 3 a.m. Felita Bailey was critically wounded and later died at an area hospital, while a second victim suffered serious injuries.
Police said that despite the challenges posed by misinformation circulating on social media, which has caused confusion throughout the investigation, law enforcement officials have remained focused on their goal of bringing justice for Felita Bailey.
It was not immediately clear how police believe Merron Bailey was linked to the shooting or if there are other suspects as the investigation is ongoing.
