Feds seal fate of man accused of shooting security guard in north Amarillo

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The man charged in shooting a security guard with an AR-style weapon in June is also charged with entering the country illegally.

Carlos Vidana-Najera, 41, was arrested on August 14 at a home near Redwood and Pecan after nearly two months of hiding from authorities.

Police say that on June 29, Vidana-Najera showed up to an event center near North Fillmore and 7th Avenue with an AR-style rifle and began to force a woman (later identified as his wife) into his truck.

When a security guard attempted to intervene, police say Vidana-Najera fired his weapon at the guard and fled with the woman.

The gunfire struck the security guard in the face and neck.

Since his arrest two weeks ago, Vidana-Najera as been held in Potter County Detention Center for charges of aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Today, he was transported and booked into Randall County Detention Center on a federal hold.

Court documents for Vidana-Najera show that a federal grand jury indicted him last week for illegal entry after deportation.

The documents say that the Mexican national had been deported from Laredo in 2020.

As a result, when law enforcement arrested him on August 14 in north Amarillo, his status as an illegal alien was documented.

When an offender is charged with both state and federal crimes, whoever arrested them first gets to prosecute first.

In the case of Vidana-Najera, he will likely be held at Randall County jail and prosecuted for his federal offense pending the outcome of his Potter County charges.

If he is convicted of his state charges of aggravated assault and kidnapping, he will serve the majority of that sentence first and then deported.

In essence, no matter what happens with his state charges, Vidana-Najera will ultimately end up in federal custody and deported.
