AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — Jury selection commenced yesterday in the trial of David Winfield, the man accused of murder following a series of random drive-by shootings in Amarillo's Eastridge neighborhood in 2021.

Winfield is charged with the murder of 62-year-old Laura Ashley, who was found dead in her car around 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 6, 2021, about a block from her home on 15th Street. Police said she was shot while driving.

The first shooting occurred just after midnight on Sept. 6, when a 17-year-old boy was shot in the upper body while driving. His injuries were not life-threatening. Three other victims were targeted throughout the day before Ashley's body was discovered.

Victims provided similar descriptions of the shooter's car, which was also captured on a surveillance camera. Winfield's car matched that description, leading to his arrest later that month on four charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The murder charge was added subsequently.

Winfield was 18 at the time of the crime.
