On May 26, 2023, Officers from Amarillo Police Department, Texas DPS, and Randall County Sheriff's Office, conducted a stop on Keith Lee THORNBURG after observing what they believed to be a hand-to-hand transaction of narcotics. Officers were in an unmarked vehicle but were wearing ballistic vests that were clearly marked with Police markings on the front and back. Officers attempted to speak with THORNBURG after he parked his SUV at 1200 N Seminole, Amarillo, Texas (within the Northern District of Texas).
When officers exited their vehicle THORNBURG immediately evaded officers and began to jump fences in the neighborhood. During the pursuit, officers observed THORNBURG with a black handgun with and extended magazine when he got up from jumping a fence. When jumping another fence, THORNBURG threw the weapon and continued to evade. THORNBURG was taken down in the front yard of 1223 Woodland and continued to resist officers until he was placed into handcuffs. Officers retraced the path that THORNBURG ran, and located a Taurus, G2C, 9mm, S/N: ACD784077.
THORNBURG was taken to be medically evaluated at Northwest Texas Hospital. TO Slover mirandized and interviewed THORNBURG at this location. During the interview THORNBURG stated he was a convicted felon out of Oklahoma and had recently been released from prison. THORNBURG stated he bought the firearm, located by officers on path he ran, in Memphis, Texas from an associate and was possessing it for his protection.
