Judge doubles bond for man accused of killing pregnant woman in hotel room on I-40

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — A man accused of killing a pregnant woman in a hotel room on I-40 in Amarillo asked a judge to reduce his bond by $400,000. Instead, the judge more than doubled it.

Judge Dee Johnson ordered Trey Phillip Greenleaf's bond to be increased from $450,000 to $1,000,000.

Greenleaf is accused of shooting Kendra Jo Vela in the head on Feb. 5 at WoodSpring Suites.

According to police, Vela was pregnant. As a result, Greenleaf is charged with capital murder of multiple persons.

On Wednesday, a bond reduction hearing was held in the case.

Greenleaf's attorney asked the judge to reduce his client's bond to $50,000.

Instead, the judge tacked on an additional $550,000 for the capital charge,'

If Greenleaf made bail, he would be required to wear a GPS monitor and be banned from being in possession of guns or drugs.

47th District Attorney Randall Sims previously said he would seek the death penalty.
