On February 23, 2022, Amarillo Police were dispatched to Mesa Verde Dr. on a report of a shooting. When officers arrived at the residence, they located a 13-year-old female with gunshot wounds. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she later passed.
Leontre Hayes, then 18, was arrested on the same day and booked into Potter County Detention Center on a charge of murder. Hayes remained in PCDC in lieu of $350,000 bond.
During the course of the investigation, investigators located images of the 13-year-old victim on Hayes’ phone. As a result, Hayes was indicted on ten counts of Possession of CP and five counts of Aggravated SA of Child in October 2024.
Hayes appeared in 108th District Court on December 5th and pled guilty to all 10 counts of Possession of CP. Punishment was assessed at 8 years TDCJ and an order of dismissal for Hayes’ murder charge was signed.
